In addition to hundreds of CCTV cameras that have appeared at Belgrade intersections, streets, and boulevards in recent months, Belgrade's video surveillance will be enhanced by 18 specially equipped vehicles for mobile recording of improperly parked cars.
The technology of mobile traffic recording, symbolically named "Sokolovo Oko" (Hawk's Eye), which is reportedly implemented in only two other cities in Europe (London and Amsterdam), aims to document improperly and recklessly parked vehicles that disrupt the flow of traffic on central city streets, particularly those used by public transport vehicles, as well as in yellow lanes, on sidewalks, and tram tracks.
Alongside detecting and capturing the license plates of improperly parked vehicles, "Sokolovo Oko" is expected to enable automatic reporting of this traffic violation, supposedly without exceptions, thereby nullifying the possibility of selective enforcement.
Twenty-four-hour recording of improperly parked cars will fall under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Police, whose officers are expected to patrol the busiest streets of Belgrade in the new and specially equipped Range Rovers at relatively short intervals, automatically documenting the highest number of violations.
Trial street recordings began on Monday, July 27, and, according to announcements, there should be no penalties in the next two weeks. Owners of improperly parked vehicles will only receive notifications at their residential addresses, while the enforcement of penalties for violations is expected to come into effect on August 10.
