Bread! Whether it's fresh and hot, with yeast or without, white, black, rye, corn, crispy, or with seeds, it is one of the staple foods in the diet of people all around the world. And so it has always been...
One of the basic symbols of nutrition, bread holds much more in our culture than just that - it is a symbol of life and togetherness. It combines and mixes many grains of wheat, symbolically representing communal life and unity. Therefore, bread is an integral part of many religious rituals, folk customs, and events deeply rooted in the culture and tradition of our people.
Aware of the overall importance of bread as physical and spiritual sustenance crucial for the survival of people in difficult times, professional painter Slobodan Jeremić Jeremija founded the so-called Serbian Bread Museum in Pećinci in 1995.
The museum collection, consisting of over 2000 exhibits, is the result of years of research, collecting, and enthusiasm, as well as travels to all parts of Serbia, exploring the history, traditions, habits, and customs of our people throughout the country. The most representative collection is undoubtedly the collection of ritual bread, which includes 96 different types of bread, some of which are still being baked today in certain parts of Serbia. Among them are various forms of Česnica (Christmas bread), Easter cakes, figurative bread with special symbolism, and various types of flatbread with different purposes.
Inside the museum space, covering an area of about 12 ares, you can find numerous tools used in traditional bread production - from reaping tools to milling tools and finally baking tools. Among these tools, there are many prehistoric and ancient artifacts found in Serbia, giving the museum both an ethnographic and archaeological character.
This extraordinary museum, dedicated to bread and its significance in the history of humanity, is open for visits only on weekends - Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM to 5 PM, preferably with prior notice. The museum tour is guided, including numerous demonstrations of processes and procedures during traditional bread production. The ticket price is 300 dinars, with a discount available for groups.
So, if your journey, excursion, or trip takes you through Srem and Pećinci, take a break and seize the opportunity to visit the unique Bread Museum, a strong contender for the European Museum of the Year.
