Black Friday | Funny Holidays

Black Friday or Crni petak is one of the "holidays" adopted from the Western world, which has been widely "celebrated" in Serbia in recent years.

This day is known for the fact that the most popular shopping malls and retail chains around the world offer significant discounts on a wide range of goods and services, causing a shopping frenzy among consumers.

Originally originating in the United States, this shopping holiday occurs the day after American Thanksgiving, and since it is reserved for every fourth Thursday in November, the origin of the name Black Friday is quite logical...

...But why Black Friday?!

Although the adjective "black" usually evokes something dark and ominous, in this case, it is related to economic reasons, which are associated with interesting anecdotes.

Namely, in the middle of the last century, taking sick leave on Fridays after Thanksgiving was a common practice among workers in the United States, in order to combine the holiday with the weekend and thus have a four-day break. For this reason, this day was labeled as "black" by employers, meaning it was bad for business.

However, it is more likely that the name Black Friday originated from another reason. In the early 1980s, most retailers in America operated on the brink of profitability. Throughout most of the year, from January to November, their monthly balances were mostly negative, but during the holiday season, they would turn significantly positive and "make the year profitable."

Thanksgiving Day in America marks the beginning of Christmas and New Year's euphoria and shopping frenzy, and the Friday following it is the first day when retailers start to generate significant profits. Since losses are marked in red and profits in black in financial reports, the Friday after Thanksgiving became known as Black Friday.
