Galleries, as places where artistic works emerge from the shadows of studios onto the "big stage," represent a kind of display of artistic creation, whether it's painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, or digital art, which is so popular in today's world.
Belgrade has a plethora of exhibition spaces, both outdoor and indoor, ranging from prestigious ones with a century-old tradition to some completely new, contemporary ones that are still unrecognized but in no way inferior to those in Berlin, Paris, or London.
From traditional exhibitions to contemporary art exhibitions, gallery visitors aim to see and learn something new, find inspiration, or stimulate their own creativity. While some Belgrade galleries maintain their displays for months or years without changing, there are also those that are very active.
Regarding the diversity of displays, their relevance, and the freshness of programs, we highlight the Top 5 most attractive galleries in Belgrade.
Gallery MSU
Salon MSU - A gallery that is expectedly serious, considering it has such a strong institution behind it, like the Museum of Contemporary Art. Professional curators select "strong" and authentic artists who are highly influential in the field of contemporary art. The gallery space is excellent, exhibitions are always approached professionally, resulting in a good program and well-curated displays.
Gallery Remont
Gallery Remont - One of the few galleries focused on contemporary art practices. A big "bravo" to them because they have stuck to such a program since their establishment, especially considering that this gallery is not backed by any major institution; the entire work is based on the dedication and expertise of committed curators. Remont's program stands out with its diversity, allowing visitors to often become acquainted with young and interesting artists. The gallery also awards the prestigious "Mangelos" prize, perhaps the most popular among young artists.
Gallery SANU
Gallery SANU - There's no need to say much about the most famous gallery in the country. It mainly focuses on historically themed displays. It is characterized by almost always fantastic exhibition setups, well-designed and conceptualized. This gallery often showcases capital works of art. Its excellent location on Knez Mihailova Street also contributes to effective communication of the gallery's program with a large number of visitors.
Gallery Eugster
Eugster || Belgrade - This gallery is a very ambitious endeavor of young gallerist Jan Eugster, who aims to launch a project in Belgrade following the example of major international galleries. It is solely Jan's ambition and dedication, leaving no room for error. Eugster gallery's program is contemporary-oriented and focused on established artists. The potential of the gallery space (adapted hangar, movable walls, etc.) is perhaps the best in Belgrade. The gallery's time, it is believed, is yet to come, and it has already presented several representative domestic and international artists.
Gallery U10
U10 - A gallery run by a collective of young artists and focused on younger generation artists. This gallery stands out with its diverse and always fresh displays. In fact, everything about this gallery is fresh and full of healthy energy, from the ambition of the initiators who are artists themselves, not curators, to various exhibitions and predominantly young audiences who often attend the gallery's program in large numbers.
Therefore, if you are an art lover or enthusiast and have not yet had the opportunity to visit any of the mentioned galleries, we highly recommend doing so in your free time.
