The Museum of the Krajina is located in Negotin and is dedicated to the preservation and protection of cultural heritage in Negotin Krajina. It is one of the first museums of its kind opened in this part of Serbia. Its operation began in 1934, one year after the celebration of the centenary of the liberation of Timok Krajina from Turkish rule, which was the reason for the establishment of the museum.
The museum collection preserves more than 15,000 objects, and in addition to the Negotin Museum, it includes:
- The central building with historical, artistic, ethnological, and archaeological exhibits
- Museum of Hajduk Veljko
- Birth house of Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac
The museum also takes care of the archaeological site Vrelo-Šarkamen and the birth house of Momčilo Ranković, located in the village of Rajac.
The permanent exhibition of the Museum Krajine showcases the historical, economic, and cultural-educational development of Negotin. The exhibited items date back to the geological-paleontological period, and chronologically arranged artifacts trace the development of this region until the end of the 20th century.
The Archaeological Department is located on the ground floor and in the lapidarium, displaying objects dating from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. Objects found in necropolises and medieval settlements from the 7th to the 14th century hold a special place within the archaeological exhibit.
Fossil remains of mollusks, fish, corals, mammals, volcanic rocks, crystal shales, sandy sediments, stone weapons and tools, axes, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figurines, iron spears and swords, daggers, ceramic objects are just a part of the cultural-historical heritage available to the public.
The presence of the Romans in this area marks the ancient period, and their dominance is best evidenced by statues, metal weapons and tools, coins, tombstones, metal and ceramic vessels, etc. The marble icon of Libera and Libera, bronze statue of Neptune, and findings from the sanctuary of Jupiter Dolichenus stand out in particular.
The historical, ethnological, and artistic collections are located on the upper floor of the museum, covering the period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
The permanent ethnological exhibition showcases rural and urban life in the Negotin region, allowing visitors to see parts of furniture, jewelry, clothing, furniture, Serbian and Vlach costumes. The historical collection traces the economic development of Negotin Krajina, the socialist period, and the 13th Infantry Regiment, as well as the Balkan and First World Wars. In addition to weapons and military equipment, this part of the museum also displays postcards and photographs depicting the departure of the Serbian army to the islands of Corfu and Vido. Portraits of significant figures from the 19th century are also exhibited on the upper floor.
The museum is open to visitors on weekdays from 8 am to 6 pm and on weekends from 10 am to 4 pm. The ticket price is 200 dinars, while students from the territory of the Negotin municipality have free admission.
