Museum of Science and Technology | Museums of Serbia

The Museum of Science and Technology is located in Belgrade and preserves the scientific and technical heritage of our country, preventing it from falling into oblivion. 

Founded in 1989 on the initiative of academician Aleksandar Despić, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and with the support of 12 economic organizations, the Museum was given the building of the former Dorćol thermal power plant in 2005.

The museum's collection includes over 20,000 exhibits, and its rich library contains rare and antique editions.

It is a cultural institution of national importance.

The Museum of Science and Technology consists of five Permanent Exhibitions:

  • Man and Technology
  • Toy Gallery
  • Science Playroom
  • Medicine in Serbia through Centuries
  • Spa Treatment Museum

Within the Man and Technology exhibition, more than 400 exhibits are displayed, following the way of life and work in our country in the past, as well as the technological development and its impact on people. It is divided into four sections:

  • Man and Technology
  • Measurement and Numbers
  • Communication
  • Wheel-Machine-Motor

Visitors in this part of the Museum can learn about electrification in Serbia, old technologies, steamboats, first domestically produced computers, and more.

On the ground floor of the Museum of Science and Technology, there is the Toy Gallery which is intended for the youngest visitors. It consists of two sections, which are:

  • Children's Museum
  • Toy Museum

The Toy Gallery exhibits over 150 items dating from 1920 to 1970. Among them, wooden toys, music boxes, plush toys, cars, dolls, model railway stations, and steam engines stand out.

Visitors get to know the Science Playroom at the Museum through interactive exhibits. The idea is for the audience to face scientific challenges directly, as experimenting and discovering promote science best. Curious visitors can test their sense of balance or experience the force of centrifuge, while interactive exhibits make physics, biology, mathematics, logic, and astronomy phenomena entertaining and accessible.

Although it belongs to the Museum of Science and Technology, a special department represents the Medicine in Serbia through the centuries, located in the former Belgrade hospital, now the building of the Serbian Medical Society at 19 George Washington Street in Belgrade. Pathological preparations, skeletal remains, medical devices, and other equipment are displayed in the building, which once served as a hospital. Visitors can learn more about why the 19th century was the golden age of medicine, what the former surgical tools looked like, how diseases were diagnosed and treated, and who introduced penicillin in our country and when, by visiting this museum department. The oldest museum item is the humerus of a Cro-Magnon, who lived in these areas over seven millennia ago.

Museum of Spa Treatment belongs to the Permanent Exhibition of the Museum of Science and Technology and is located in Vrnjačka Banja. It contains over 180 exhibits and showcases the tradition of spa treatment in Serbia, spanning nearly 150 years. Documents, photographs, postcards, experiences of doctors, patients, and guests provide the best evidence of treatment principles and therapeutic treatments.

The Museum of Science and Technology is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The price of a single ticket is 300 dinars, with the possibility of discounts for group visits and privileged categories of the population.
