Mud(r)ijada in Lunjevica | Tourist Calendar of Serbia

Mud(r)ijada is a unique gastronomic event in the world, which has been held every summer since 2004 (with the exception of 2020) in the village of Lunjevica, near Gornji Milanovac.

It is an unofficial world championship in preparing dishes made from white kidneys of various animals, a specialty that many claim, in addition to being a gourmet delicacy, also has aphrodisiac properties.

The specificity of this local event has quickly spread its fame far beyond the borders of Serbia, and for several years now, guests from all around the world have been visiting the small village of Lunjevica. The conceptual creator and initiator of this unique competition is Ljubomir Erović, a resident of Milanovac, thanks to whom this little village in Šumadija found its place on the gastronomic map of the world.

During the two-day event, on the first day, teams and competitors are usually welcomed in the so-called Mud(r)istic camp, preparing them for the so-called Mud(r)fight or the competition in preparing goulash and other dishes made from animal testicles, which takes place the following day. So far, in the cauldrons, in addition to the usual pork and beef, white kidneys of roosters, donkeys, ostriches, and kangaroos have been simmering.

An independent jury composed of experienced gourmets carefully evaluates the appearance and taste of each prepared dish, and the winner of the competition, in addition to the satisfaction and recognition for culinary skills, receives a portable trophy - a wooden statue of a man with an erection.

After the announcement of the winner, as is usually the case, an evening music program follows. Even in this segment, Mud(r)ijada stands out because, unlike many similar festivals that are usually accompanied by folk melodies, this event nurtures rock and roll culture.

In addition to the white kidneys themselves, the trademark of Mud(r)ijada is the widely known plum brandy of these regions, which is packaged in specially designed packaging for this occasion, called Mud(r)ovača.

The enthusiasm and spontaneity of the organizers, along with the humorous nature of this event and the authenticity that is not easy to achieve in today's times, make Mud(r)ijada increasingly popular celebration year after year.

Over time, the Tourist Organization of Gornji Milanovac, local companies, and organizations have also joined in organizing it, so it is expected that this event will continue to grow in the years to come.

This year's 19th edition of Mud(r)ijada will be held on September 1st and 2nd. More information about participation and the event itself can be found on the official Mud(r)ijada website and in local media.
