Local Museum in Priboj is located in the old part of the town, on the Brijeg hill in the house of the esteemed Stevović merchant family.
It was founded in 1990, and part of the museum complex with a local character is also located in Zelenac in the Jevđević house.
The monument of folk architecture in the center of the old bazaar still maintains its authentic appearance. The museum contains around 2,500 exhibits, and some objects are as old as seven millennia. Stone hammers, hammers, tools, and jewelry of the first miners attract special attention from the public.
In addition to stone tools, bone tools, iron, bronze, and amber jewelry, the museum collection also showcases the everyday and spiritual life of multiple civilizations and peoples that have encountered and intersected in these areas.
The Museum's activities are organized through a library of professional literature, an atelier, a conservation workshop, and several departments:
- Ethnographic
- Historical
- Artistic
- Archaeological Department
The museum space in the old part of the town consists of two parts. The archaeological and artistic departments, gallery, amphitheater, and lapidarium are located in the two Stevović houses with a courtyard, while the ethnographic and historical departments with the library and conservation workshop are located in the Jevđević house with an auxiliary building.
The permanent exhibition consists of four thematic units:
- Jarmovac Miners
- Life and Work of Vujica Jevđević
- Danilo Lazović
- Town Fashion in Priboj – photographs, costumes, and clothing of Priboj gentlemen and ladies from the late 19th century
Although it refers to Jarmovac miners, this thematic unit within the Permanent Exhibition is mostly related to the Iron Age. It includes various examples of mixed jewelry, equipment, and weapons, and the collection of primitive and valuable mining tools holds particular value. The exhibits from the Jarmovac miners' settlement are extremely interesting because they were made of river stone, i.e., pebbles that were the only hard material at that time. The Museum preserves around forty such tools.
The legacy with the gallery of Nadežda Nade Vitorović functions as a separate unit within the artistic department, while the legacy of Professor Dr. Vujica Jevđević with the City Hall exists within the ethnographic department.
Professor Dr. Vujica Jevđević donated his house in Zelenac, dating back to the late 19th century, to the Local Museum, and it became part of the Permanent Ethnographic Exhibition. Thanks to his monetary donation, the house regained its original appearance. This is one of the oldest buildings in Priboj and consists of two parts. The ground floor housed a tavern, and the upper floor was used for living. Merchants from Nova Varoš used to visit it frequently. Today, it represents an important cultural monument, protected by the state, and serves as a reminder of the internationally recognized scientist who achieved fame in America.
Admission to the Local Museum is free for the people of Priboj and all lovers of cultural and historical heritage, and the working hours are from 8 am to 3 pm.
