"Bubijada" in Šabac | Tourist Calendar of Serbia

Šabac "Bubijada" is a traditional event that has been gathering Volkswagen Beetle enthusiasts for two decades at the end of July or beginning of August in the largest city in Mačva – Serbia.

The legendary Beetle, officially known as Volkswagen Käfer, was the first model ever produced by the famous German car company and remains one of the best-selling cars worldwide with over 20 million units sold.

Besides its quality and accessibility to the general public, the Beetle's unique design has contributed to its global popularity, making it one of the most recognizable car models ever created. Remarkably, its appearance has remained largely unchanged over nearly seven decades of production, with minimal design differences between the first Beetle in 1938 and the last one in 2003.

The production of the Beetle expanded beyond Germany in the 1970s, with assembly plants established worldwide in Brazil, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Africa, Nigeria, and, of course, the former Yugoslavia.

The assembly of the Beetle in the Sarajevo car factory made this car, along with the domestic "Zastava," the most popular vehicle in the former Yugoslav territory, recognized as a distinctive middle-class vehicle that loyal owners still cherish today.

Even newer Beetles from the early 21st century are considered vintage cars, while models from the 1980s rightfully carry this title. Although they once dominated city streets, Beetles are now rarely seen in regular traffic. Most of these four-wheelers are carefully preserved and maintained in their owners' garages, only taken out occasionally for proud owners to show them off at gatherings organized by fellow Beetle enthusiasts.

The members of the "Buba klub Šabac" (Beetle Club Šabac) are among those passionate Beetle lovers who organize the popular "Bubijada" event every year in Šabac, attracting enthusiasts from the entire region.

During the "Bubijada," a large number of Beetles parade through the streets of Šabac, delighting both passers-by and visitors while filling their owners with pride.

This event provides an ideal opportunity for vintage car owners and enthusiasts to meet, enjoy a kind of vintage car exhibition, and exchange experiences about restoration, preservation, adaptation, and care of their vehicles. Some truly museum-worthy specimens can often be found among them.

Over the years, the "Bubijada" has become a true city attraction, and the Tourist Organization of Šabac has recently joined its organization.
